Massive L.A. fire shuts down major freeways

An early morning blaze engulfed an apartment tower under construction in downtown Los Angeles. The fire consumed two-thirds of the 1.3 million square foot building, which comprised an entire city block. Large windows had given under the intense heat, and much of the 7-story building had given way to flames. Over 250 firefighters were dispatched to the area, shutting down the adjacent 110 freeway to set up equipment to contain the blaze. Though the cause of the fire has yet to be determined, the fire posed a major threat to the densely built-up urban area surrounding it, and wreaked havoc on the already hectic LA traffic.
