Amazon Releases Echo, A Voice-controlled, Cloud-connected Speaker

Earlier this month, Amazon unveiled it’s new product, the Echo – a voice-controlled, cloud-connected speaker. The easiest way to conceptualize the Echo: Think Siri without the smartphone. The slim, unobtrusive speaker can detect your voice across a room, where it acts as a personal tech assistant from the future. Want to hear your favorite song? Just ask. Suddenly remember something you need to add to your to-do list? Call out to “Alexa,” and she’ll jot notes, take dictation, and more. The list goes on.

Need to know what to wear outside and are too lazy to stick your head outside? All joking aside, Amazon’s Echo represents the future of computing, where cloud-connected devices respond to your every whim without you needing to pick up your phone or look at a screen. With the colossal flop that was the Amazon Fire Phone and a fairly lackluster embrace for Siri, it remains to be seen what impact the Echo will have, but it’s already turning heads in the tech world.

The price is $99 for Prime members, $199 retail.
